II. TACOMA ART MUSEUM - FREE TALK TOMORROW (THURSDAY)
Sister Cities hosts free Tomas Oliva Art Lecture on
January 10 at 6pm at Tacoma Art Museum
On Thursday, January 10, 2002 at 6 p.m. the
Tacoma-Cienfuegos, Cuba Sister City Committee will
host a free artist lecture at Tacoma Art Museum, 1123
Pacific Avenue. Tom*s Oliva will give a slide
presentation on Cuban Contemporary Art. Artists, art
educators, and art lovers will appreciate this
introduction to the genesis, challenges, and beauty of
the visual arts in Cuba. Puget Sound artists preparing
to participate in the upcoming artists exchange
program scheduled for February 25, 2002 will also be
attending.
Tomas Oliva was born in Havana, Cuba in 1958. Oliva
was brought up in a society that was undergoing
radical changes. From an early age he was immersed in
the activity of the Cuban artistic avant-garde. He was
the son of a renowned sculptor and art educator by the
same name.
His father was a founding member of the Grupo de los
once or Group of Eleven who introduced abstract
expressionism to Cuba, set the standard for Cuban
contemporary art, and are the most important reference
point for subsequent 20th and 21st century Cuban
artists.
Oliva graduated from the Academy of St. Alexander in
Havana and furthered his training at the Instituto
Superior de Arte, also in Havana. In 1978 he traveled
to the Ukraine where he studied at the Kiev Institute
of Art. In 1984 he received a Master's of Fine Arts
degree in art education, drawing, painting, and
monumental sculpture. Oliva returned to Kiev in 1988
to exhibit a series of drawings and sculptures
entitled Moods. He was awarded a certificate in art
education and monumental sculpture in 1989 from the
Kiev Institute of Art.
Oliva's sculptures are displayed in Cuba, the Ukraine,
India, Chile, and the United States. Among the most
noteworthy are the Doors of St. Andrew in Sumner,
Washington and Homage to Frida in Karnataka, India and
Putaendo, Chile. The November, 2001 issue of Sculpture
features the Cementerio de las carretas or Cemetary of
Wagons in Putaendo, Chile where there is a photograph
of Oliva's most recent homage to Frida Kahlo. Oliva's
latest work, a series of ink and red chalk drawings,
is based on the enduring and extraordinary power of
Shakespeare's 66th Sonnet. The writer and journalist,
Ralph Rewes, writes: "Cuban-born artist Tomas Oliva,
first set forth the goal of mastering realism, and
master it he does, not to keep it as a permanent
style, but as a step toward new dimensions in drawing
and specially in sculpture. Realism is also a way for
him to grasp surrounding elements, to search for other
forms of expression. He wants to blend the infinite
and finite nature of man..."
Oliva has been an art educator in Cuba, Mexico, and
the United States. He is currently a faculty member at
Seattle Central Community College where he teaches
watercolor and drawing. The Fountainhead Gallery in
Seattle, Washington represents Oliva. His art may also
be viewed at http://www.olivasart.com.
III. MUSICAL CELEBRATION
Tacoma-Cienfuegos Artists Exchange Program!
A Cultural Musical Celebration benefitting a
Humanitarian Art Exchange
between sister cities, Tacoma Washington and
Cienfuegos, Cuba.
January 13th, 2002, 4-7pm
Rosedale Community Center, 8205 86th Ave, N.W., Gig
Harbor. Local Gig Harbor artist and arts educator,
Janice Wagner, has been chosen to be part of a
humanitarian mission between the sisters cities
Tacoma, Washington and Cienfuegos, Cuba. Artists will
travel to Cuba on February 25th to participate in this
first-of-its kind educational art exchange.
Janice will guide students in Tacoma to create four
group "movable murals" to celebrate the richness of
Tacoma's heritage. She will then conduct an art
residency with Cienfuegos students to create the same
about their city. Murals from each city will be
exchanged and displayed. This project will establish
a sister city school connection and plant the seed for
future exchange programs.
A Cuban and American Musical Celebration to raise
funds for this project will be held Sunday, January
13th, 4:00 to 7:00pm, at Rosedale Community Center,
8205 86th Ave, N.W., Gig Harbor. This dinner concert
will feature delicious Cuban cuisine and exciting
Cuban music by Tomas Maldonado and friends. Jim
Valley, Steve Lalor and friends will join the fun with
original music from Jim's just- released CD, "Rolling
Sea," folk music, and some good ol' classic rock `n
roll.
