II. ELECTION OF CHAPTER OFFICERS FOR 2003
Nominations are now being accepted for three chapter
positions open for election for 2003. The three
positions open are those of president, eastern vice
president, and that of secretary. All three positions
are for two-year terms. The positions of northwestern
vice president, southwestern vice president and
treasurer are not open for election until next year.
For the sake of continuity on the chapter executive
board, only half of the positions are open for
election each year.

Nominations close on May 31. Voting takes place by
mail ballot in September. Nominations are open to all
members in good standing. Please e-mail your
nomination to Steve Green at sslgrn@aol.com. (Steve
is completing his second term as chapter president and
is ineligible to run for re-election.) All candidates
are encouraged to submit a statement of 200 words or
less (if at all possible) about their candidacy. The
statement should include years teaching, service to
the language community, a short bio with relevant
information, and ideas for the chapter. We encourage
you to nominate yourself and/or a colleague. Serving
as a member of the chapter's executive board can be a
professionally rewarding and stimulating experience.

For more information, please see our constitution at
http://aatsp.20m.com/constitution.htm.

III: EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY: As I mentioned in the
last BOLE, I have a friend in Chile who is interested
in visiting a school in Washington State. He has 8
students that will be traveling with him this year,
and they are looking for families interested in
hosting them for 3 weeks. They will be visiting in
October (not in March as I stated before).
The students will participate in Spanish classes,
teaching about life in Chile. They also present songs
and dances.
In exchange, your students are invited to visit Chile
any time during the year, and stay with the students'
families in Chile.
For more information, contact Brenda Fisher at
bfisher@esd101.net.

IV. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON SUMMER INTENSIVE
INSTITUTE FOR SECONDARY SPANISH TEACHERS: (Advanced
Spanish Grammar and Conversation)
August 5-16, 2002
Last year's institute participants told us they really
liked to concentrate on Spanish language, and that's
what we have done this year. If you can't go to a
Spanish-speaking country this summer, the Institute
may be just what you need to keep skills current or to
expand them.
This summer's institute has three components:
Intensive Language Practice, Conversation Practice and
Using the Web. All three components are integrated
and based, in part, on the results of student needs
questionnaires. Our Conversation Practice instructor
is also a dance teacher and plans to include some ways
to integrate dance into your curriculum in her
component.
Instructors are Maria Gillman for Intensive Language
Practice, Marina McVittie for Conversation Practice,
and Bridget Yaden for Using the Web. Gillman
coordinates third-year Spanish at UW and has taught in
previous institutes. McVittie teaches at the
secondary level and served as liaison to the UW in the
High School Spanish classes in the past. Yaden
coordinates the Language Resource Center at PLU.

Participants develop a final project on teaching a
particular grammar concept that integrates all
components of the Institute. Successful students
receive 5 credits of Spanish 499. Cost for the
Institute, including a $30 nonrefundable registration
fee, is $729. Students should have three years of
college Spanish or equivalent to attend. For more
information or to receive a complete brochure, call
206-685-6401 or e-mail lhk@u.washington.edu.

To register using a credit card, call 206-543-2310 or
1-800-543-2320 or see www.extension.washington.edu.
Reference Registration # 61950.

Smith Hall, Room 211, University of Washington,
Seattle, Washington. Para mas informacion y
reservacion comuniquese al correo electronico:

"Ratas, ratones, rateros" " tells the sad and dramatic
story of petty delinquents; altough, it appears to be
a parable of the Ecuadorian society,
since each one of of the three principal characters
represents the three major regions of the country: the
Andes, the coast and the jungle. The world
of Salvador, a young and naive petty thief, is about
to be shaken with the arrival of his cousin Angel, an
ex-convict in search of easy money and a
hideout. Salvador gets wrapped in his cousin's twisted
dealings in an attempt to escape from his suffocating
family environment. Dragging
along his family and friends, Salvador ends up
destroying the few things that made sense in his life.
Salvador seals his destiny and relegates himself to a
life where only crime exists.
"Ratas, ratones, rateros" tells a story of innocence
lost, through an intimate look at delinquency in a
Latin-American country.

One of the protagonists, Carlos Valencia, said in
Huelva, Spain, that filming in Ecuador is very
difficult, because there is no public support
and, perhaps for this reason, the movies produced in
this country are rare.
The actor emphasized that the social responsibility of
the film is so great, that several people told the
members of the filming team that this would
damage the image of Ecuador. "Nevertheless -the actor
affirmed- this is the reality and we are part of a
country with many problems, corruption and
delinquency: we are not only the beautiful Andean
music that everyone knows."

The movie, a miracle of simplicity and sobriety, which
narrates the sad process of loosing the innocence, was
shown in Trieste, Venecia, San
Sebastian and Toronto, and it received praises from
the international critics everywhere it played. The
Director was born in Quito in 1972 and, after studying
Filming in a university in Los Angeles, USA, returned
to his country with the idea of making this movie,
which is the first he directs.
In the past, he made several short films and
"videoclips." "Ratas, ratones, rateros" was nominated
for the "Premio Goya" as the Best Foreign Movie of the
Spanish Language. Directed by Sebastian Cordero.

XII. The Center for Applied Second Language Studies
at the University of Oregon is seeking schools to
pilot their web-based, computer adaptive reading
assessment. The results of this pilot will not be
official, but will give students and teachers a good
idea of general reading proficiency according to ACTFL
reading/writing proficiency guidelines and the Oregon
Benchmarks.
The assessment will automatically analyze student
responses in terms of specific strengths and
weaknesses and make results immediately available to
teachers. It will also compare students' scores with
scores nationally, giving you information that may be
helpful for program evaluation. The assessment is a
"smart test" that reacts to students' responses by
giving
them easier or more difficult items based on their
responses. In this way, every student takes a
customized assessment that will be neither too easy
nor too difficult for them, so the test is appropriate
for students of any level through intermediate-mid.
Students need only a recent web browser and an
Internet connection to take this assessment. You can
give the test in one class period.

The Spanish pilot will run from May 1 through May 31.
If you are interested in piloting this test, please
contact Olivia Berkey at oberkey@oregon.uoregon.edu by
April 15, and give her your name, school name, school
address, and telephone number. She will then send you
an orientation packet. Your participation is very
helpful in their effort to create a fair,
user-friendly, computer adaptive reading proficiency
test of Spanish. If you have any questions, please
feel free to contact Olivia.

XII. STUDENT EXCHANGE WITH BURGOS, SPAIN
If you are interested in organizing a student exchange
with a group of students from Burgos, Spain please
contact this teacher ASAP. (The deadline is April
1st.) The students are in grades 10 and 11.
