"NASA EXPANDS POPULAR "SPACE PLACE" WEB SITE INTO

ESPANOL

NASA's popular English-language Web site The Space

Place went online today in Spanish,

http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/espanol. The Space Place

en Espanol combines information about current and

future space missions with hands-on activities,

resulting in a fun and educational site for

elementary-aged children.

The unique Web site can serve as an instructional tool

for teachers of Spanish with easy-to-follow

explanations about space exploration and science. In

addition The Space Place en Espanol includes a link to

the English-language site, providing yet another

teaching opportunity.

By logging on, students become active participants in

NASA's exciting space exploration missions throught

the Web site's five categories: Make Spacey Things;

Do Spacey Things; Space Science in

Action; Dr. Marc's Amazing Facts; and Friends Share.

In Make Spacey Things, students learn how to engineer

a Toy Asteroid Nanorover, bake Asteroid Potatoes, and

craft a Momentum Machine. In Do Spacey Things, your

classroom Blasts Off for a Mars Adventure, Unscrambles

Could Pictures, and even Gets a Space Nose.

In Space Science in Action, students become solar

system detectives when they Solve an Extraterrestrial

Riddle, Name the Trees from Space, and See Inside a

Closed Box. In the section Dr. Marc's Amazing Facts,

young people learn How You can Hit a Soccer Goal on

the Moon from Earth, How Far a Spacecraft can Fly in

One School Year, and What Spacecraft gets the Best

"Gas Mileage."

In the Friends Share section, boys and girls can

become planetary pals with children from across the

country as they view others' Visions of Life in the

New Millennium, meet Future Scientists and Engineers,

and read Out of the World Poetry.

VIII. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY IN TACOMA

A volunteer opportunity at the YWCA of Pierce County.

Charlas para la Mujer takes place one Friday afternoon

each month as gathering place for Latino women in the

Tacoma community. Children accompany the participants

of this group, making childcare necessary. Volunteers

play with and care for the children under the

supervision of a staff member in a safe and

constructive manner. I think that local Spanish

students would be great candidates for these

positions!

Volunteers are needed the third Friday of each month,

from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The next meeting will be

November 16. This would be a great way for students

to give back to their local community while being

provided with a hands-on opportunity to practice their

Spanish-speaking skills. Perhaps extra credit could

be offered to interested students.

Please let me know at your earliest convenience

whether or not this is an opportunity that you are

interested in extending to your students. You may

reach me at (253) 272-4181, ext. 264 or at

raxlund@ywcapiercecounty.org.
