I.  SUMMARY OF TECHNOLOGY IDEA SHARE AT PLU

Thanks to the 28 participants who attended the
technology idea share at PLU this last Saturday!
Here's a summary of some of the things we looked at:

A.  Commercial CD-ROM Material:  We looked at several
commercial CD-ROM programs:
Legends of the Americas
¿Sabías que . . . ?  from McGraw-Hill
Learn to Speak Spanish
Triple Play Plus

I recommend the following site for purchasing
commercial software at a competetive price (I don't
get any money from this company - I've just had good
luck with them):  World of Reading at www.wor.com

B.  Creating multimedia exercises for FREE!  We looked
at the program Hot Potatoes.  You can get a free copy
and more information at:  www. halfbakedsoftware.com

C.  Web sites for Spanish teachers:  Eduardo showed us
a wide variety of great websites!  You can access them
from his very useful site:
http://depts.washington.edu/~spnrectr/irst.htm

· Workshop times and descriptions:

Krashen Workshop 1:  The Case for Bilingual Education
(2:10-4:10 Friday)
Contrary to what one reads in the press, there is
a very strong case for bilingual education. Bilingual
education has been a consistent winner in the
research: Children in bilingual education acquire
English at least as well as, and usually better than,
children in all-English programs.
They also drop out less. Contrary to popular opinion,
Prop. 227, which dismantled bilingual education in
California, does not deserve the credit for increased
English reading test scores.

Krashen Workshop 2: What is intermediate natural
approach?  (1:30-3:30
Saturday)  Intermediate natural approach is based on
the same principle that is the foundation for natural
approach: Comprehensible input.  Students at the
intermediate stage are ready to understand more
demanding input, but are not ready to fully understand
authentic input.  Intermediate natural approach is
thus sheltered subject matter teaching, classes in
which intermediate second language acquirers learn
subject matter presented in a comprehensible way.  One
possibility for sheltered subject matter teaching for
foreign and second  language students is popular
literature, designed to introduce students to a wide
variety of popular literature in the hope that
students will get interested in one genre and become
pleasure readers in their second language.

Polumbus Workshop #3: Fun X 8!  Multiple Approaches
for Success in the
Classroom  (1:30-3:30 Sat.)  Students enter the
classroom with different learning styles and
abilities.  This workshop will present activities to
introduce and reinforce new vocabulary and new grammar
concepts in different, multi-sensory ways so that more
students will likely be successful in learning a
second language.
An interactive, hands-on workshop, teachers will
participate in each activity.  Participants will
receive extensive handouts and classroom-proven
techniques.  Presented in English with examples in
Spanish.

Jan Polumbus is a national Foreign Language Consultant
with Prentice-Hall, publisher of educational books.
Jan has twenty-nine years of experience as a Spanish,
French, and English teacher in public and private
schools.  She was a nominee for the Oklahoma Teacher
of the Year in 1995, and has presented at AP summer
workshops.

III.  WAFLT CONFERENCE -  AATSP INFORMATION

In addition to the AATSP lunch, meeting, and idea
share, here are a few more things to watch for at the
WAFLT conference!  We'll have a table, manned by
several board members, with information on joining
AATSP, details on up-coming events including the
conference on Sephardic Jewish history and
communities, free Spanish books and materials
(donations accepted), and also we'll be selling
postcards designed by our Eastern VP Ricardo Chama.
They have beautiful scenes from Hispanic countries and
you can send them to colleagues or reward students
with them.  See you in Pasco!
