V. SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL 2001
There will be many interesting performances, but
in
particular there will be a perfomer from Cuba.
"When
Juan-Carlos Formell lived in Cuba, he was forbidden
to
perform, because his music was deemed too personal
and
individualistic. When he came to the United States
he
met other Cuban musicians who shared his desire
to
express himself freely through music. With
them he
created his Grammy-nominated debut recording,
Songs
from a Little Blue House, about the place where
his
grandmother was born at the beginning of the
last
century, and lived all her life. This now almost
mythical landscape-rich with fruits, flowers,
and
animals-can be revisited by her grandson only
in
memory, but is re-imagined here, in Juan-Carlos'
solo
concert of rapturous song." The concert
is in Spanish
with introductions in English. There will
be several
school performances in May.
