VI. MA PROGRAM IN SPANISH REINSTATED AT THE UW
UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON 98195-4360
DIVISION OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE STUDIES
Dear Colleague:
Last year and this we have redesigned our M.A. degree
in Hispanic Literary and Cultural Studies at the
University of
Washington. We are ready now to admit the first group
of a dozen or fewer students for study beginning next
fall. You will understand that we are eager to bring
our enhanced and energized program to the attention of
promising undergraduates and others who may be
interested in studying with us while living in one of
the nation's most lovely cities. We will be grateful
if you will share the following information with your
colleagues and your students.
Our graduate faculty and advanced graduate students,
assisted by all of our faculty, have restructured our
M.A. degree in Hispanic Literary and Cultural Studies
to achieve a flexible blend of course choices
balancing studies of Spanish-speaking peoples on both
continents. We have increased the possibilities of
interdisciplinary study with our augmented adjunct
faculty and others; and we make provision also for
study abroad. Students may elect to write a M.A.
thesis or a shorter M.A. essay or to substitute course
credits instead. Our M.A. examination is tailored to
individual students' records of study and will prove
to be less distracting and more rewarding than most.
Our program is intended both to train public school
and community college teachers and to prepare students
for doctoral study in Spanish Literary and Cultural
Studies.
Our graduate faculty is comprised equally of
specialists in Latin American and Spanish peninsular
cultures, and our numbers and range of expertise are
increasing. We added a tenure-track faculty position
last year; we add another this year; we hope to add
still another next year or the following. We have
added also to the number of adjunct faculty from
neighboring disciplines who will participate actively
henceforth in our department's planning and curriculum
offerings.
We will be able to offer our M.A. candidates financial
support for the full term of their study, in the form
of Teaching Assistantships and Research
Assistantships. Our preparation, training, and support
of our Teaching Assistants is exceptionally effective.
We expect our new M.A. candidates will be as diverse,
accomplished, and attractive a group as those who
recently have completed study here. Those students
came to Seattle from across the US and from Spain,
Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and China, and the
majority of them are continuing study in doctoral
programs at this university, U.C., Berkeley, Princeton
U., the U. of Iowa, and elsewhere. Our graduate
students are represented on our department committees
and are organized as well into an association that
sponsors visiting performers and scholars and readings
of student papers, translations, prose fiction and
poetry.
The department brings distinguished scholars, writers,
painters, and other creators to the university for
talks, performances, and meetings. Earlier this year
we sponsored a successful symposium on the short
fictions of Cervantes; in the winter and spring of
2001 we will hold an international symposium featuring
four distinguished commentators and screenings of the
films of Pedro Almodóvar, as well as a visit by Elena
Poniatowska, chosen by the University to be a Walker
Ames Lecturer for this academic year.
INQUIRIES AND APPLICATIONS. Applications for Teaching
and Research Assistantships received by January 31
will be assured preferred consideration for the
Division's financial support. Applications for
admission to graduate study, and for Teaching
Assistantships, are accepted until July 1 for
admission the following fall quarter. To receive our
application packet of forms and information, please
speak with Elena Johns, our Academic Advisor, at (206)
543-2075, or address e-mail messages to her at
emjohns@u.washington.edu , or write to us at the
following address:
The Graduate Program Coordinator, Division of Spanish
and Portuguese Studies;
University of Washington;

We invite you to visit our Web site at:

about our department, and consult

additional information about the University of
Washington.
ABOUT OUR M.A. PROGRAM. We have revised our
M.A.program in Spanish for 2001-2002 to provide
advanced general education in Hispanic cultural
studies and literature. Our new program devotes
increased attention to the rich diversity of Hispanic
cultural texts--films, photographs, autobiographies,
testimonios, folk art--and to their interdisciplinary
study while also promoting broad understanding of
Spanish and Latin American literature. The program
gives careful attention to acquainting students with
the traditions of scholarship in our field as well as
a range of current textual theory, criticism and
research methods. Study of Portuguese and other
Romance literatures and cultures, Comparative
Literature, Romance and Spanish Linguistics, and other
related disciplines may be included in the Master's
Degree program. The degree is earned normally in six
academic quarters.
DOCTORAL STUDY. Students who wish to pursue advanced
study in Spanish and Portuguese in a post-Masters'
degree program do so by entering the doctoral studies
programs of Comparative Literature or other
departments of the University. Typically these
programs require four quarters of course work followed
by written and oral exams in fields the student has
defined for specialized study. The final requirement
for the degree is the preparation of a written
dissertation and its defense.
INVITATION. We invite your comments on our M.A.
program, and your questions about the information
above, and your inquiries. Please direct messages to
any of our faculty, or to the department chair at
csteele@u.washington.edu, or to our Academic Advisor
at emjohns@u.washington.edu .
