¡Saludos desde Tacoma! As promised, I will try to get
a bolectrónico out twice a month during the school
year. Please remember that if you have anything you'd
like to put in the BOLE, such as information on a film
or cultural event in your neighborhood, scholarship or
grant information, etc., I would be more than happy to
post that information. Just send me an email at
yadenlbe@plu.edu. ¡Gracias! -Bridget

I. WAFLT CONFERENCE - IMPORTANT UPDATES!
"Brad Owen, Lieutenant Governor of Washington, will
make a brief address to the joint WAFLT/COFLT
conference in Portland, OR on Friday, October 13. He
will address the plenary session around 9 a.m. and
will meet with the world languages teachers of WA
state from 10:40-11:30 to discuss common concerns.
After that he will join conference members for lunch.
Mr. Owen is a supporter of world languages. Come to
let him know we appreciate his work for us and to show
him our solidarity.
Another recent change to the conference is the
addition of 8:00 AM sessions on Friday morning before
the plenary. Although previously advertised to begin
at 9 AM, valuable sessions necessitated the earlier
starting time. Please arrive in time to attend the 8
AM sessions!
For those unfamiliar with the WAFLT/COFLT conference,
it is Oct. 12-14 at the Jantzen Beach Doubletree Inn
with the theme of Reaching and Teaching All Learners.
Aside from Mr. Owen's session, there will be over 70
others on a wide range of topics of interest to world
languages teachers--and over 60 exhibitors. Keynoters
are the nationally-known educators Robert Di Donato
and Marjorie Hall Haley. For conference information
contact Lauren Kiolet at lkiolet@earthlink.net. Plan
now to attend this unique conference opportunity!"
II. NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM
By now all members should have received the brochure
for the 2001 National Spanish Examinations. If you
would like to participate this year, please order the

ocadman@kalama.com no later than Dec. 15, 2000. When
ordering forms, please include your name, name of
school, address, phone number, and email.
Participants must be current members in good standing
of the national AATSP and of the local AATSP chapter.
Dues for next year must be paid by Dec. 1st, 2000.
Send your national and chapter dues to DANDY PORTER,
treasurer. Check the web page for further info on

III. TECHNOLOGY
1) Volume 4, Number 2 of Language Learning &
Technology is now available at http://llt.msu.edu.
This is a Special Issue on "Literacies and
Technologies" and was guest editedby Rick Kern. The
subscription to this on-line journal is free.
2) DATE CHANGE: The date has been changed for the
McGraw-Hill teleconference on language teaching. The
original date conflicts with that of another
teleconference. They moved the date up a week earlier
to WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18th. It will be also available
in webcast via RealPlayer or Microsoft Media Player,
but we are reminded that the quality may not be as
good. You can get the satellite coordinates or the
URL (web address) by registering (free) for the
broadcast. You can email languages@mcgraw-hill.com
for more information.
IV. PBS DOCUMENTARY TONIGHT!
Just a reminder that the show "La Ciudad" will be
shown tonight, Friday September 29, at 10pm on KCTS 9
(PBS). Here's the description:
"Set in New York City's Latin American neighborhoods,
this program tells the narrative stories of
immigrants seeking community in large, impersonal
cities."
V. DAY OF THE DEAD IDEAS:
1. The Teatro Milagro in Portland is having a Day of
the Dead Festival. It runs from October 27-November
11. Tickets are very reasonable at $10-$12. Here's a
quote from their webpage:
"In the Día de los Muertos Festival, you will be
treated to an evening in celebration of life and
death, as the symbolism of El Día de los Muertos is
revealed through traditional Mexican and modern
dances, puppetry, song and verse. Don't miss chance to
see the award-winning Milagro Bailadores in Portland's
only annual Día de los Muertos Festival!"
Their webpage is: http://www.teleport.com/~milagro/
2. Thanks to Lori Taylor for sending the ideas below!
If you have any to add, please send them in and I'll
put them in the mid-October BOLE.
"Go into Netscape Navigator, not Microsoft Internet
Explorer and do a search for "Day of the Dead" and
"El Dia de los Muertos". Every year some things
change so there is no one website. The University of
Guadalajara has wonderful stuff on a huge variety of
subjects in English and Spanish. They had recipes
last time I was there. Yahoo is a good search engine
for cultural stuff.
These were among the first 10 the search pulled up.
www.public.iastate.edu/~rjsalvad/scmfaq/muertos.html
www.azcentral.com/ent/dead/
www.mexconnect.com/mex_/feature/daydeadindex.html
www.holidays.net/halloween/muertos.htm
These are only a few. Any smart person will check out
the website and surrounding links to be sure it has
exactly what you want. The last website has links to
Halloween that some parents would not want students
exploring."
