Queridos socios:

I.  NEW VISIONS IN WORLD LANGUAGES TASK FORCE.  Jay Adams-Feuer, your secretary, has been appointed to this national task force and will represent Washington.  I will be talking with Debbie Parks (our Northwest representative to the American COuncil on
the Teaching of Foreign Languages) as to how to survey YOU and get YOUR ideas about the future of World Language Education.  I will meet in Dallas for the first time with other members of the panel in November.

II.  SPANISH POSITION OPEN AT JOHN F. KENNEDY HIGH.

I received the following communication from Lynn Klausenburger, who along with Paloma Borreguero runs the Language 103 College-in-the-High-School programs:

Jay, Would you send this request to the AATSP electronic members?  John F. Kennedy High School in Burien, which is a private Catholic school, also needs a Spanish teacher.  Both schools are excellent places to work.  HMJ HS has a 2-year grad requirement for all students in fl.  Thanks for the help.

their students.  They attend an orientation session on the Seattle campus and work with a liaison throughout the school year.
Students receiving a 2.0 (75%) or better satisfy the UW exit requirement in foreign languages for most degree programs.  Credit is generally transferable to public institutions and to many private institutions both within and outside of WA State.  Teachers and students are entitled to UW library privileges for the duration of the course.

Other courses in the UW College in the High School Program include two English composition classes.  Beginning in 1999 math
courses in calculus, precalculus and geology are being offered.  The purpose of theProgram is to offer college-level instruction to high school students and to establish a closer collaboration with high school teachers.  Please contact Lynn Klausenburger at (206) 685-6421 or atlhk@u.washington.edu for more information.

Input on teacher needs in this area is actively sought and welcomed.  UW faculty and classroom teachers are developing the certificate structure and content.
