II. FROM OSPI: MIDDLE SCHOOL EXCHANGE WITH
RUSSIA.
YOUR SCHOOL DOESN'T HAVE TO TEACH RUSSIAN.
The principal of a school in Russia would like
to
establish an exchange program with a middle school
class/building in Washington. The school
has very strong arts and dance programs.
They have
been invited to perform in various places throughout
the world, including Italy.
The principal, Lyudmila Aldatova, is a dynamic
leader
who reads and speaks excellent English.
If you, or
someone you know, may be interested in establishing
contact with a school/students/teachers in Russia,
please contact the principal:

III. BOOKS RELATING TO SPANISH/HISPANIC
CULTURE (note
the Basque title!)
This is a new section of the BOLE, and if you
would
like to contribute or mention a book, please
do so!
1. Newly published books:
"Lorca:A Dream of Life" (Farrar Straus Giroux,
$35),
by an American author, Leslie Stainton, is a
powerful
written account of Garcia
Lorca's turbulent 38-year lifetime as both a
poet and
a person.
"The Basque History of the World" by Mark Kurlansky
(Walker, $24), spotlights a unique people in
northern
Spain (and southwestern France). The Basques
have
their own language, tenacity and fierce sense
of
independence. Kurlansky brilliantly illuminates
every
aspect of their culture and throws in a few of
their
distinctive recipes.
2. Hierro Wins Spain's National Poetry Award -
Jose
Hierro, the 77-year old Madrid native received
the
prize for a collection entitled "New York Notebook,"
which was published last year and has sold 25,000
copies, a rare feat for poetry. Hierro backed
the
Republicans in Spain's 36-39 Civil War and was
imprisoned for four years. He speaks out against
social injustice.
