Queridos socios:

Thanks to many of you the WAFLT Conference and the
AATSP Luncheon, Idea Share, and the Joy
Renjilian-Burgy workshop were all successes.  Barb
Rupert gave one of her bang-up workshops, and many
AATSP-affiliated presenters made us proud.

It was so good to see Dottie Szendre, Rosemary Leiva,
Cynthia McCurdy, Steve Smith, Bob del Valle (WAFLT
Teacher of the Year!), Angela Davila, Debbie Holmberg,
Jessica Suarez, Erik Lampi, Carol Froelich, Kerry
Chama, Egils Macs, and the many, many socios, 65 in
all, who attended the luncheon.  ¡Viva el capítulo!

Let's get to the news:

III.  PFLAG Family on Spanish-language Talk Show
 "Cristina" TOMORROW  (Presentation of this
information does not necessarily constitute
endorsement by the chapter of this show's content)

Cristina is commonly referred to as the
 "Latin-American Oprah."  Her
Spanish-language talk show has a huge worldwide
 viewership, and she is great
on g/l/b/t issues.  Tuesday, Oct. 12, she will air a
 show with PFLAG
Portland President Illiana Strauss and her lesbian
 daughter.  The show will
focus on problems the daughter faced in school,
 Illiana's unconditional love
and support, and PFLAG's important work.  They will
 be running PFLAG's
national phone number and web site.

Perhaps the show can be taped for use in middle and
 high school Spanish
classes, and for school counselors and GSA advisors
 to loan to
 Spanish-speaking families who need info.

TCI Cable tells me the Cristina show will air on
 UNIVISION October 12.
(Check local cable listings for the Spanish-language
 channels in your
 community.)

IV.  MEXICO FLOODS!

Nona Brady is wondering if anyone knows of a school
(or other effort)to provide clothing and
nonperishables to the flood victims in Mexico.  If you
have info could you inform me AND her?  Her e-mail is
mariposa@olypen.com.

V.  SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

Our scholarship fund of $1,022 is paltry, to be blunt.
If anyone has nonprofit fundraising skills or
contacts, could you contact the chapter?  If I hear
nothing from members, I will look into it this summer
in Seattle and talk to Microsoft and others.  This is
a critical function: we must aid our students to help
create the future cadre of Spanish and Portuguese
teachers.  I personally would ultimately like to see
us awarding four scholarships each year.

VI.  TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2000.

This decision will be made in May 2000 by the full
Board.  Please begin thinking about everyone K-20--
people you think exemplify the best of what this state
has to offer.  People like Barb Rupert (1999 winner),
Marian Thom, Rosemary Leiva and Angelia Nivens.  Hit
us with some names!

VII.  PUERTO RICO 2000.

Tours of the island, a job fair, and a high quality
conference, August 2-6, AATSP in San Juan, PR.  E-mail
lsandste@bentley.unco.edu.  We will be looking for
ways to fund Barb Rupert, 1999 Teacher of the Year to
do one of her fantastic seminars there!

VIII.  FROM EDU TOBAR AT OSPI:

Now is also the time to begin thinking about the
Post-to-Post and School Exchanges with Spain.  if you
are interested in teaching in Spain next academic year
or bringing a chunk of students there for an extended
period, please contact Edu at etobar@ospi.wednet.edu.
It is also time to begin thinking about Salamanca and
the teacher scholarships for a month of summer study.
Dandy Porter did it last summer and LOVED it!  Ask her
about her experiences, cliftonporter@seanet.com.

IX.  BOARD.

Thank you for showing us your confidence and
reelecting us for 2000-2001.

Your Board consists of:

Steve Green, President 1998-2001
Paloma Borreguero, NW Vice President 1998-2001
Sonja Hokanson, E Vice President 1998-2001
Oriana Cadman, SW Vice President 1999-2001
Jay Adams-Feuer, Secretary 1998-2001
Dandy Porter, Treasurer 1999-2001

Appointed:

Ana María Rodríguez-Vivaldi, CLAMOR Editor
Elwin Wirkala, Portuguese Liaison

X.  CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT APPROVED.

The Constitution of April 10, 1999 promulgated
provisionally in Tacoma is now your chapter
constitution.

XI.  FEE RAISE APPROVED BY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP.

With about 65 chapter members present, the chapter
agreed to $8.00 dues for 2000.  It was proposed by
Egils Macs and seconded by Steve Smith that chapter
dues for 2001 be raised to $10 to help the scholarship
fund, keep CLAMOR afloat and help us with mailings,
etc.  It was the intention of the Board to keep the
fees at $8.00.  We were overruled!

XII.  SW WASHINGTON.

We want to have an event in SW Washington in the near
future.

A)  We need to recruit more members there: who knows
teachers in the Vancouver region?

B)  What sort of event should we hold there?  Milagros
Theater in Portland?  Restaurant?

XIII.  CULTURAL INFO.  My grad program keeps me from
reading the Weekly, Stranger, and Seattle Times.  When
you learn about a cultural event, could you write to
me immediately?

XIV.  The chapter wants to thank Joy Renjilian-Burgy
for doing a bang up job, staying for the whole
conference, exciting the membership, raising funds,
and encouraging us as a group!

Thanks for being a great chapter.  Dandy collected
lots of memberships, and our vibrancy and
functionality are because you all make this chapter
what it is.

Hasta muy pronto.

Jay
