El verano ya esta aqui, y antes del ultimo dia
de
clases, yo querria avisarles de unas noticias
importantes:
I. NEW CHAPTER TREASURER. Because
of my move to
Pullman and because I am running only for Secretary,
I
have resigned as Treasurer effective June 30,
1999.
President Steve Green has appointed Alexandra
(Dandy)
Porter to be your new chapter Treasurer, since
she is
the only candidate for the job and because she
enjoys
the full trust of the junta directiva.
The Executive
COuncil ratified Steve's appointment unanimously.
Dandy's teaches at University Preparatory School
in
Seattle and lives on Capitol Hill. Her
e-mail is
cliftonporter@seanet.com. Feel free to
contact her
with questions you may have.
You will receive a renewal letter from me along
with
your ballot in early September and two address
labels,
one to send Dandy your check, and one to send
Robert
Slabodnik, AATF President, your ballot.
The President
of AATF, Vice President of AATG, and Bob Clairmont,
National Spanish Exam Coordinator, will be counting
ballots this fall in Spokane.
II. Nominations Sought for Paul Simon Award
for the
Promotion of Language and International Studies
The Paul Simon Award was established in 1982 and
first
awarded in 1983. It was modified in 1986 upon
the
establishment of a second award (The Founders
Award).
The award will now be presented to an individual
or
group from OUTSIDE the language teaching profession.
The Paul Simon Award may be conferred annually
by the
Central States Conference on an individual or
group
from outside the language teaching profession
that
has demonstrated leadership in the promotion of
language learning and international understanding
has shown evidence of responding to the
recommendations of the 1979 Report of the President's
Commission on Foreign Language and International
Studies and has thereby contributed to the cause
of
world peace
has strong ties with one or more of the seventeen
Central States, and
exemplifies Senator Simon's dedication to and
enthusiasm for the areas of language and international
studies
Nominations for the award may be submitted by
the
members of the Central States Conference Advisory
Council. Nominations of a group or organization
should
include the primary goals of the organization,
the
relevance of the goals to the profession, a history
of
the accomplishments of the group or organization,
the
sphere of influence of the group, the nominator's
professional relationship to the group, a rŽsumŽ
of
the group's director or leader, and support
documentation that bears direct relevance to
the
nomination. Support documentation should not
exceed
ten pages.
Nominations of an individual should include the
candidate's present position and role in the
promotion
of foreign language and international studies,
the
ways in which the candidate meets the specific
criteria for the award, the capacity in which
the
nominator has known the candidate, the candidate's
current curriculum vitae, and support documentation
that bears direct relevance to the nomination.
Support
documentation should not exceed ten pages.
Nominations should be submitted (5 copies) by
January

III. WSU SUMMER CLASSES UPDATE FROM DR. HOKANSON:
Update!
WSU´s Spanish 544 will be taught in English
this
summer instead of in Spanish!
Due to demand from teachers of languages other
than
Spanish for this summer´s 3 semester-credit
graduate
course in Foreign Language Methodology, it will
be
taught in English. It begins June 21, from 9-12
noon
each day M-F for three weeks, taught by Dr. Hokanson
on the Pullman campus (where on-campus housing
is
still available for $11 per night).
Don´t forget the afternoon opportunity:
Dr. Frederick
teaching a 3 CR Hispanic Culture course from
1PM-4PM,
also M-F, Pullman campus, for 3 weeks.
The following three weeks provide opportunities
for
SIX MORE graduate credit hours: Hispanic Cultural
Linguistics (mornings) and Latin American Short
Stories (afternoons).
All courses except the methodology course will
be
taught in Spanish.
Special note: A unique and wonderful CD-ROM has
been
produced to provide the language, music, and
video
samples from all over the Spanish-speaking world
that
will form the basis of the course in Hispanic
Cultural
Linguistics. It will be FREE for the use of those
students enrolled in the course!! What a deal!

VIII. PORTUGUESE. Elwin Wirkala, our
Portuguese
liaison, is trying to discover more Portuguese
instructors and speakers in the state.

I suggested Washington Academy of Languages and
Seattle Language Academy. Also, if someone
is a
speaker of Portuguese and is teaching Spanish,
Elwin
would like her/his name too.

Elwin has also notified us that a new Brazilian
restaurant will open in the U-District this fall.
He
will be heading up our first Portuguese event
there--
an informal gathering with good, inexpensive
food to
talk about the economic benefits of Portuguese
and
ways to start pilot programs in high schools.
This
will be a fun event and more information will
be
forthcoming.
IX. VIAJE A NOOTKA. (From Edu Tobar--EXCITING!!!)
Jorge Conesa, de Everett Community College pide
cualquier tipo de ayuda para su proyecto sobre
el
viaje a Nootka del Capitán Pedro Alberdi.
Esta
es la carta que me escribió.
Estimado Señor Tobar,
Mi nombre es Jorge Conesa y trabajo en el instituto
de
idiomas, Northwest Language Center en Everett
Community College. La razon por que me comunico
con
UD. es poque estoy organizando un viaje de recreacion
de Historia a la Isla de Nootka para commemorar
el
nuevo milenio y la presencia Espanola en esta
costa
(en el verano del 2000). Este viaje planea
trazar la
ultima fase del viaje del Capitan Pedro Alberni
a la
Isla de Nootka (Vancouver) en kayaks. Hemos
pedido
ayuda a la oficina de juventud Catalana y a la
sociedad National Geographic. Existen varios
objetivos para este viaje. Uno de ellos es de
popularizar y fomentar en conocimiento del impacto
de
la presencia hispana en esta costa. El
exemplo de
Alberni es uno de valor, justicia, amistad con
los nativos de Nootka y el entendimiento cientifico
(Alberni compilo el primer dictionario de la
lengua
nativa Nootka y calmo tensiones entre los nativos
y la
colonizacion hispana previa). Un segundo
objetivo, es
el de celebrar este acto de una manera publica
conicidiendo con el nuevo milenio. Como
UD. sabe la
poblacion hispana en los EEUU esta incrementadose
de
manera tal que dentro de unos 50 anos se va a
convertir el la minoria politica y social mas
grande
de este pais.
Nuestro instituto toma muy seriamente el papel
de
communicar valores y tradiciones Espanolas.
Este
viaje es una oportunidad mas, a travez de la
cual,
podemos realizar nuestras metas. Le comunico
esto en
caso de que UD. o algun organismo que conozca
puedan
estar interesados en:
1) Participar como explorador en el evento
(En este
momento, solo van tres kayaks dobles y solo quedan
dos
puestos libres).
2) Aportar al el costo del viaje.
3) Publicar, reportar sobre el viaje.
4) Usar el viaje en conjunto con otros eventos
para
mas efecto

X. BASQUE EVENT/CLOCK HOURS/TERTULIA NAVIDENA.
Although we haven't as of yet confirmed the date
with
AATF (and that is a big thing!) the Board of
Juan de
Fuca Chapter and Marian Thom of Shorewood High
in
Shoreline (just north of Seattle) have TENTATIVELY
come up with Saturday November 13 as the day
for our
TERTULIA NAVIDENA with Basque speakers, cooking,
crafts, and CLOCK HOURS. Let us know what
you think
of this date.
XI. JOY RENJILIAN-BURGY AT WAFLT IN SPOKANE
OCTOBER
7-9.
Our incoming AATSP National President (currently
Vice
President) Joy Renjilian-Burgy will, as you know,
be
our AATSP luncheon speaker on Saturday October
9.
IMPORTANT: She will also do a fee workshop on
using
Hispanic film to teach about race, class, and
gender
in Spanish Language and Literature classes.
SHE HAS
AGREED TO DONATE ALL HER PROFITS FROM THE FEE
WORKSHOP
TO THE JUAN DE FUCA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND--
which
means that this money will help your aspiring
students
of Spanish and Portuguese in college!
Well, enjoy your summer break, especially people
like
Dandy Porter who is going to Spain on an Embassy
of
Spain program!
Your next BOLECTRONICO will arrive in mid-July,
and
the one after that in mid-August, just as I'm
trying
to get my life in order in Pullman.
I am proud to be associated with the good people
of
this chapter: not just the ones who run it, but
also
the rank and file. You have made our events
successful. You have made us-- and I kid
you not--
the talk of all the language associations in
the
region, and the talk of the AATSP nationally.
It is your enthusiasm and dynamism that is bringing
our National President to Spokane and that brought
our
National President to PNCFL in Tacoma.
I have
received queries about our particular brand of
"mojo"
(as Austin Powers would call it) from Alabama,
Kentucky, Connecticut, Texas, and California.
Give
yourselves a hand, take a deep breath, enjoy
your
summer and...
