We have many things to share with you this week
and we
think there's much of note.
I. SPANISH TEACHER OF 1999: BARBARA J. RUPERT,
FRANKLIN PIERCE HIGH SCHOOL.
Four highly qualified nominees were brought to
our
attention: Marian Thom of Shorewood High, Rosemary
Leiva of West Valley High, Angelia Nivens of
Edmonds-Woodway High, and, of course, Barbara
Rupert.
THIS WAS A VERY TOUGH DECISION. In many
ways, all
four are teachers not just of the year, but of
the
decade. Marian's creative innovations and
mentoring,
Angelia's leadership on standards, and Rosemary's
long
and inspirational service all stood out and made
us
proud to have them as members.
Barbara, in addition to having won the Christa
McAuliffe Award, started a FLES program in her
district and is author of EN ESPANOL, McDougall
Littell's newest textbook.
We are proud of all of you!
II. FRENCH/SPANISH (majority French) POSITION

III. WAFLT FALL CONFERENCE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
BOTH
WAFLT AND AATSP. The fall conference (Spokane
October
7-9) has many ways for you to be involved and
to be of
service to the language profession. AATSP
will need
volunteers for 1 hour stints to "man" our table
and
provide information, and WAFLT has a real need
for
registration and other help! Contact Spokane
conference chair Suzanne Jespersen
sjespers@esd101.net, WAFLT President Twila Wood
woodtw@ksd.org, or AATSP Secretary Jay Adams-Feuer
joaquin@wsu.edu for info on volunteering.

IMMERSION. Through the Northwest ESD, any

by Windy Leach on practical, proven techniques

teaching Spanish through immersion, August 4,5,

through
Seattle Pacific University ($70) OR 20 clock
hours
($45). The class costs $140. Materials

VII. DECEMBER TERTULIA: BASQUE EVENT.
We are working
with Robert Slabodnik, incoming President of
AATF
(French) to coordinate the Basque event, and
maybe
even to figure out a presentation that would
involve
clock hours, since so many expressed approval
of this
idea. Our December tertulia is the probable
time.
Depending on her schedule and ours, Marian Thom
offered her home as the site of such an event.
The
beauty of her Shoreline home, with its stunning
views
of Puget Sound, would make this tertulia a most
memorable one. If size becomes an issue,
we may have
to choose a King/Snohomish-area high school as
our
site in order to accommodate everyone interested.
VIII. SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
NIGHT A
SUCCESS. Steve Green and Krista Swenson
had tears in
their eyes as we watched a touching love story
set in
Spain and Finland, and beautifully told through
the
eyes of Ana and Otto, two Spanish youths whose
names
are palindromes and who fall in love amidst the
pain
of their family lives. Alexandra (Dandy)Porter
hosted
our potluck in her lovely home. Julie Rawson
came all
the way from Eastern Washington!
We apologize for the constant changes in date,
time,
and agenda, and for the conflict with the WAFLT
Board
meeting. All of this cost us attendance:
only 14
people came. We sold the remaining 11 tickets
in the
line that stretched for two blocks. It
was a fabulous
movie. Take advantage of the film schedule
I sent you
the other day and see some of the Spanish language
films!
