Espero que todos esten interesados, porque hay
mucha
informacion que compartir hoy.
We have information on scholarships abroad and
prizes
from National, as well as local events and the
usual
socio news. READ ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS
TO MEXICO AND
SPAIN FROM NATIONAL AATSP FOR SUMMER 2000 (EIGHT
TOTAL!).
I. OUR WEB SITE is much improved yet again
due to the
hard work of Eduardo Tobar and some VERY useful
web
sites from Krista Swenson of Edmonds School District.
Thanks also to Elwin Wirkala of UW for some Portuguese
sites that we have not yet attached. The
web site
address is at the bottom of this e-mail.
(Also
remember that the Seattle Central Community College
Portuguese class info was in last week's
BOLECTRONICO.)
II. BACK ISSUES OF BOLECTRONICO are published
on our
web site (Thanks, Edu!) as well as by WALANG,
whose
site you can link to through ours. BTW,
BOLECTRONICO
will be published only once monthly during July
and
August. Many teachers only have e-mail
at work and
during this time have no access. Also,
to access
articles between July 1 and August 31, you will
need to
go to the web site, as I will not be mailing
them out
as usual.
III. UPDATE ON FILM FESTIVAL AND EL CENTRO
DE LA RAZA
TOUR. A really pleasant guy from Seattle
International
Film Festival told me that the program would
be
finalized by April 12, so I'll call him then.
I will
then discuss films with Steve, Paloma, Sonja,
Ana Maria
and Bob and we will select one that occurs on
a
Saturday matinee or evening or a Sunday matinee
and
call EL CENTRO with our preferred tour time.
They
appear to be very accommodating and interested
in us.
Also, the Film Festival (SIFF) is interested
in helping
us host an AATSP Spanish Film reception.
There would
be a nominal cost: I told them that our membership
is
made of teachers and professors badly in need
of raises
and unable to foot highfalutin bills, but they
assured
me that they would present me with some modest
options
which I will relay to you in about two weeks.
IV. PROYECTO SABER is a Seattle School District
tutoring/mentoring program that serves at-risk
Latino
students at Chief Sealth and Ballard High Schools.
At
CHief Sealth, there is even an Advanced Language
Arts
and Social Studies class for these students that
celebrates Latino heritage as students earn high
school
credits. Not all Proyecto Saber students
speak
Spanish; some speak only English, but Proyecto
provides
them with a meaningful opportunity to learn about
and
take pride in their ethnic heritage. Nohra
Giraldo, a
colombiana who runs the Ballard High School Proyecto,
tells me that the drop out rate for students
at
PROYECTO is 0.1%!
Aren't we proud to live in a state whose largest
school
district actually practices the celebration of
diversity it preaches?
V. WE ONLY HAVE TWO NOMINATIONS FOR SPANISH
TEACHER OF
1999 and the April 30 deadline is fast approaching!
Think of someone you know who is a deserving
socio/a
and nominate him/her. The person must be
K-12.
Criteria have been shared in previous BOLECTRONICOS.
VI. WE ARE STILL HOPING THAT OUR CANDIDATES
FOR VP,
K-12 EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, AND POSTSECONDARY EXECUTIVE
COUNCIL FOR 2001 WILL BE ELECTED LATER THIS FALL.
The
results of last year's ballot is as follows:
1999 VICE PRESIDENT (automatically AATSP President
in
2000) is Dr. Joy Renjilian-Burgy, Professor of
Spanish
at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA.
1999 K-12 EXEC COUNCILWOMAN, Elizabeth Giulianelli,
Teacher of Spanish, Cherry Creek High School,
Englewood, CO.
1999 POSTSECONDARY COUNCILWOMAN, Patricia
Pardinas-Barnes, Professor of Spanish, (UCSD)University
of California, San Diego, CA.
The good news here is more western representation:
last
year only one member of the Executive Council
was from
west of the Mississippi!
VI. NATIONAL AATSP PLANS TO RECOGNIZE TEACHERS
AND
PROGRAMS:
1. OUTSTANDING TEACHER OF THE YEAR:
Teachers in the
following areas will receive an award of
$500 and a
plaque:
A. Levels K-8
B. Levels 9-12
C. College or University.
See page 171 of the March issue of HISPANIA for
details
on how to nominate someone or apply for these
awards.
IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED HISPANIA, CONTACT Heidi
or
April at this e-mail address:
lsandste@bentley.unco.edu
They will be sure to help you get your issue.
Also, if
you did not receive CLAMOR by the time you get
this
BOLECTRONICO, contact Ana Maria Rodriguez-Vivaldi
at:
rodviv@mail.wsu.edu
2. DIRECTOR OF OUTSTANDING FLES PROGRAM.
(Plaque and
$200) See page 172 in HISPANIA for details
of how to
nominate someone or apply for this award.
3. CHAPTER INCENTIVE AWARD. We are
not old enough a
chapter, but if we sign up lots of new members
between
now and next year this time, we may be eligible
for a
VII. THREE SCHOLARSHIPS TO CUERNAVACA, MEXICO
AND FIVE
TO MADRID, BARCELONA, AND SALAMANCA, SPAIN.
Socios
from our chapter have won these scholarships
before,
and the number of people who take the incentive
to
complete these applications are frequently quite
small.
Two Cemanahuac scholarships went to socias
from our
state this summer-- one through PNCFL and one
through
AATSP. See page 172 of March's HISPANIA.
VIII. THE ROBERT G. MEAD, JR. LUSO-HISPANIC
TRAVEL AND
STUDY AWARD. You do NOT have to enroll
in courses at
any university for thsi award! You do,
however, have
to come up with a rationale for your travels.
You may
use the $1000 provided to help you travel to
any
Portuguese- or Spanish-speaking country.
Of course, as
with all these scholarships and awards, you must
be a
member of AATSP.
IX. TRAVEL STIPENDS FOR THE JULY AATSP CONFERENCE.
At
last year's conference in Madrid, this year's
in
Denver, and next year's in Puerto Rico, AATSP
will have
a number of $500 stipends to help you defray
the costs
of travel to the conference. This year's
conference in
Denver is from July 30-August 3. AATSP's
Placement
Bureau will be there and in full swing to help
you on
the way to the job of your dreams.
X. CLAMOR. The next CLAMOR deadline
is in late June
(I will include the exact date after I hear from
Ana
Maria). Won't you take a moment to e-mail
her at
rodviv@mail.wsu.edu to thank her and tell her
what a
great job she and the grad students have done?
XI. DUES. I wanted to share with you
the local dues
of a number of chapters around the country:
Some comparatives to our $5.00 dues:
Alabama: $10
Arizona: $7
Ontario: $7.50
Colorado: $8
Florida $10
Chicago $10
Iowa: $12
Massachusetts $10
Nebraska $8
Dos Ríos (Western New York/NW Pennsylvania)
$8
Oklahoma (where the wind comes sweeping down
the plain)
$10
OREGON $7
Puerto Rico $10
South Dakota $10
Texas $7
Wisconsin $6
Wyoming $10
The production of CLAMOR and the mailings we send
by
hard copy to inform you of goings on in the chapter
are
costly. At the general meeting in Spokane
this fall,
we will be asking you to approve a dues increase
to $8
TOTAL (from our current $5-- a $3 increase over
this
year, in other words) and in return we will promise
you
a timely CLAMOR, occasional mailings, this same
great
BOLECTRONICO, fun and professionally enriching
gatherings and our eternal gratitude. We
will also be
asking you to approve the Constitution.
We will
promise the same dues for 2000 and 2001-- NO
RAISE for
at least two years, and we will see what we can
do
about avoiding a raise after that: we do not
want to
make promises for the board after us, which may
well
have a different composition.
We know how hard you work and that those extra
$3 are
nearly half a movie ticket, 3/5 of a Sunday New
York
Times, or a latte. We also know that the
state of
Washington has treated you badly with regard
to
inflation and pay. This weighs heavily
on our minds as
we ask you to approve this.
Please note, though, that the dues we charged
this year
are the same dues the chapter charged in 1992,
its last
year of operation before its resuscitation in
1998.
Steve, Sonja, Paloma, Ana Maria, Bob, and I consider
you our friends and colleagues, and we want to
do the
best we can by you-- and it is hard to ask your
friends
for money! Isn't the chapter worth it,
though?
XII. LIGHT-HEARTED REQUEST. I would like
to include a
cartoon or a joke with each week's BOLECTRONICO.
If
you find something on the web or know of a joke
that is
Spanish- or Portuguese-themed, please submit
it! There
are people in the organization with varying values,
people who are Evangelical Christians, and people
who
are interested in gay studies, for example, so
keep in
mind the following rule: if you could tell this
joke to
your parents AND a child, and your best friend
would
still find this funny if s/he spoke Portuguese
or
Spanish, SUBMIT IT!
Que se diviertan muchisimo durante las vacaciones
de la
primavera.
Saludos cordiales,
JAY
