The Oscars are in the background...isn't
this supposed to happen on
Monday nights? Anyway, that has nothing
to do with Spanish and
Portuguese.
Aquí tiene las noticias:
I. http://www.cal.org
For those of you interested in linguistics
as they apply to teaching,
that is, Applied Linguistics, this web
site is a godsend. Some of you
no doubt have known about it for some time,
but truly, if you haven't
seen it, pay a visit. (I will be
teaching Spanish to college students
and pursuing my second M.A. in Hispanic
Linguistics and Pedagogy at
WSU-- I've been told to think of this web
site as my new home!)
II. WAFLT SPRING REGIONAL: UN GRAN
EXITO
With Dr. Mryiam Met of Baltimore County
Public Schools and Ron Sims,
King County Executive keynoting, language
teachers from all over
Washington converged on the Olympia suburb
of Lacey and North Thurston
High School for a great conference on FLES,
technology, and the future
of World Languages. Debbie Parks,
our ACTFL Board Member, put
together an excellent program. Thank
you, Debbie.
III. PNCFL IN TACOMA APRIL 8-10.
I know we're all really tired by the time
April rolls around, but the
degree of advocacy PNCFL does on the National
level and the
consistently high quality nature of these
conferences make it
imperative that we attend while PNCFL is
in Washington. This is
PNCFL's 50th anniversary, and the President
of AATSP nationally will
be there. If you haven't signed up,
think about how relaxing and
energizing that Thursday and Friday will
be if you do go. We'll see
you there: quite a few socios are presenting,
and Steve, Paloma,
Sonja, and I will be there. We'll
be glad to chat, have some lunch,
attend some great conferences, and see
old friends.
IV. PUBLICATIONS.
CLAMOR should be in your hands within a
few days max...Ana María set
up the bulk mailing two weeks ago, there
was a glitch, and then the
glitch got fixed, so you'll see it soon.
Twila Wood, AATSP socia and President of
WAFLT wishes to remind you
that if you wish to submit an article to
WAFLT FORUM, you should do so
by April 15, her next deadline. FORUM
just came out last week and
looks GREAT. There is much material
on AATSP in there, so tell your
WAFLT Spanish teacher friends who aren't
socios of AATSP to take a
look.

Eduardo Tobar has been working on our web
site some more: the link to
Hispanic newspapers is fixed (though the
Chilean paper I sent you
yesterday isn't included, so save the address
if it interests you),
more hot links have been added, and it
is really coming together.
VI. CENTRO DE LA RAZA/SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL
FILM FESTIVAL
Everyone who responded but one person wants
these two events on the
same day...and that socia lives in my neighborhood,
so she understands
why others would want this put together.
This week I will call SIFF
first, get some film dates, then call El
Centro and see when they can
give us the tour that coincides with the
day of a film. The film date
will be a Saturday or Sunday to provide
for optimal attendance. It
could be Saturday day or evening...it all
just depends. We will also
retreat to the Bauhaus after the film for
a discussion...I'll see what
I can do about getting a UW Hispanic film
expert to join us.
VII. NOMINATIONS. We still
need them for the BOARD and for SPANISH
TEACHER OF 1999. Thanks to the couple
of you who dipped their toes in
the water on the Board issue!
VIII. PORTUGUESE CLASS AT SEATTLE
CENTRAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE. On
Wednesday nights from 6:00-8:30 Seattle
Central Community College will
be offering Conversational Portuguese.
The entire class costs
$100.00, and it is offered through the
Community Education Program.
It is NOT offered for college credit.
The required texts are FALA
BRASIL: PORTUGUES PARA ESTRANGEIROS by
Elizabeth Pantao and Pierre
Coudry, and WEBSTER'S PORTUGUESE/ENGLISH
DICTIONARY by Antonio Houaiss
and Ismael Cardum.
IX. If you have an exciting event
that you're putting
together/hosting/moderating/coordinating:
LET US KNOW!
If you know of socios who are retiring
after a years of service to
children, please keep us posted.
At WATSP, Steve, Sonja, Paloma, Ana
María, and I think of Spanish and
Portuguese teachers as a large
family in our state, and we want to know
about your happy moments as
well as your needs. Thanks for contacting
us, keeping us informed,
coming to the events, and sharing your
knowledge and expertise. We
wouldn't have this organization without
you!
